New Lyme disease vaccine study is underway in our area
TheCDC ranked Pennsylvania the highest in Lyme disease cases in 2020 making our area particularly prone to infection.
Pfizer is working on a Lyme disease vaccine and is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials which is the final phase before receiving FDA approval. The study aims to see if the vaccine is safe and effective in preventing Lyme disease in children and adults 5 years of age and older.

Ohio billionaire from Dayton planning to take sub to Titanic site to prove a point
DAYTON, Ohio (WKRC) - A billionaire from Dayton, Ohio is planning on taking a sub to the Titanic site to prove a point.
According to The New York Post, Dayton real estate investor Larry Connor said he and Triton Submarines co-founder Patrick Lahey will take a two-man submersible to the wreck of the Titanic to prove the industry is much safer in the wake of the tragic OceanGate implosion. “I want to show people worldwide that while the ocean is extremely powerful, it can be wonderful and enjoyable and really kind of life-changing if you go about it the right way,” Connor told reporters with the Wall Street Journal.

2 dead, 7 injured after shooting in Pennsylvania
PENN HILLS, Pa. (TND) — Two people are dead and seven are injured after a shooting early Sunday in Pennsylvania.
The Allegheny County Police Department said reports of a shooting in Penn Hills first came in around 2:53 a.m. First responders found two people dead, a woman and a man, inside Ballers Hookah Lounge and Cigar Bar.
They also found seven additional victims, one of whom is in critical condition, police said.

Johnstown moves closer to adopting new city banner
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Many topics were discussed during this month’s Johnstown City Council meeting including a motion to adopt a new city commemorative banner.
The design for a new Johnstown commemorative banner was also voted on during the meeting after nearly 40 submissions were already narrowed down to two by city residents.

Judge grants bail reduction for former Somerset 911 coordinator charged with sex abuse
Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — Prosecutors in Somerset County say a former county 911 coordinator who is accused of sexually abusing multiple children has been released from jail after a judge granted a motion to reduce his bail.
District Attorney Molly Metzgar says Bradley Lavan applied for the bail reduction earlier this year and during a status hearing on Thursday, the judge reduced his bail from $750,000 straight to $500,000 secured.

Pennsylvania will be 1st to get Bloomberg funds
WASHINGTON, Pa. (WJAC) — Pennsylvania will be the first state to receive funding as part of former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's charity donation of $50 million to help fight the nation's opioid epidemic.
Bloomberg Philanthropies will give at least $10 million in funding to Pennsylvania to reduce opioid deaths.
Pennsylvania had the highest number of drug overdose deaths in 2017 among all states and twice as many as in 2014.

Widespread power outage reported in Altoona
ALTOONA -- Many Altoona residents are without power Sunday night due to a widespread power outage.
Blair County Non-emergency says callers began reporting problems around 6:30 p.m.
According to an Altoona Firefighters Facebook page, there was an underground explosion inside a vault on 15th Street, causing the outages. Penelec is on scene trying to restore power.
There is no estimated restoration time.
Altoona Police are asking people to avoid downtown if possible while the problem is resolved.

Crews refloat container ship that led to Baltimore's Key Bridge collapse
BALTIMORE, Md. (7News) — Nearly eight weeks after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed in Baltimore, Maryland, the container ship that caused the deadly wreck was finally moved. High tide was just before 5:30 in the morning -- that's when crews in Baltimore worked to refloat the M/V DALI cargo ship with the help of tugboats to move it to the Baltimore marine terminal.
